Woody O'Hara

Woody O'Hara passed away early Wednesday morning October 26, 2011. He was born in Winchester, Va. on January 24, 1941, the son of the late Elwood Wilson O'Hara Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Buckner O'Hara. Woody graduated from John Handley High School lettering in track, football and basketball. He was inducted into his high school's Hall of Fame. He graduated from Shenandoah College and taught a year of high school before becoming a radio announcer for WINC in Winchester, Va. He also worked at radio stations in Montgomery, WV and Laconia, NH. He was Program Director at WXVA in Charlestown, WV and in 1969, moved to Morgantown, WV to work for WAJR AM. In 1970 he became a sports broadcaster with West Virginia Mountaineer football and basketball for the Mountaineer Sports Network with Jack Fleming. While employed with MSN, he hosted the Bobby Bowden show and Mountain Scene Tonight. He also worked as advertising salesman for Magic 101FM and hosted the Children's' Miracle Network along with various other programs for WNPB Public Television. Woody had been awarded many honors over the years including Broadcaster of the Year and Grand Marshal of the Winchester, Virginia Apple Blossom parade and the Buchannon Strawberry Festival. In 2008, he was inducted into the West Virginia Broadcasters Hall of Fame. He is survived by his wife of forty-four years, Vicki Davis O'Hara and three children, Michael O'Hara and wife Shelley of Reedsville, WV., Kelly O'Hara Shaffer and husband Donald of Morgantown, WV., and Woody O'Hara III of Morgantown, WV. He has three granddaughters, who were very special to him, Alex, Anna and Azia Shaffer. He is also survived by a brother, Joe O'Hara of Winchester, VA. and two sisters, Bonnie O'Hara and Marilyn O'Hara both of Virginia Beach, Va. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Friends may call at the Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home on Sunday October 30, 2011 from 10am until time of funeral services at 2pm with Pastor David Hudson officiating. Burial will follow at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of Woody to the Kidney Foundation of the Alleghenies, 700 5th Ave, 4th Floor, Pittsburgh, Pa. 15219
