William L. 'Bill' Mason, age 95, of Morgantown, West Virginia, passed away peacefully from natural causes on July 5, 2026. Born in Morgantown on May 17, 1931, Bill was a cherished member of his community and a dedicated journalist who left an indelible mark on the world of broadcast journalism.
A proud graduate of the West Virginia University School of Journalism in 1956, Bill moved to Virginia, where he spent 60+ impactful years as a broadcast journalist reporting on a wide range of stories for many TV and radio stations, including WSLS-TV, Roanoke, VA, and WSVS radio, Crewe, VA. He received several awards and recognitions for his dedication and integrity throughout his profession. His love for journalism was only eclipsed by his love for his family, community, classical music, and dogs.

William is survived by his nieces, Rebecca Mason (Terry Heinze), Ruth Young, and Kim Havenner, as well as several great-nieces and nephews who will remember him fondly. He is also survived by his brother, George Mason, who continues to reside in Morgantown.

In addition to his parents, Kermit R. and Rebecca Lashley Mason, Bill was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 40 years, Kathryn Louise Sowers Mason, in 2002, his brother Thomas Mason (Dorothy), and sister Rebecca Mason Perry (Robert). 

His family will honor Bill's request for a private interment next to his wife, Kathryn, at the Trinity Cemetery, Daleville, VA. 

William L. Mason will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and colleagues. His legacy as a committed journalist and a beloved family member will endure in the hearts of those who had the privilege to know him.
