William Charles Davis, 78, of Cheat Neck, WV, passed away July 29, 2011 at Monongalia General Hospital after a long battle with cancer. Mr. Davis was the last surviving member of the Joseph Davis family. He was born on February 23, 1933 in Morgantown WV. Surviving Mr. Davis is his current spouse Dorcas Davis, William Joseph Davis and his spouse Patricia Finke Davis of Manassas, VA , Rebecca Davis Hartley and her spouse Douglas E. Hartley of Lancaster, PA, 6 grandchildren and 2.5 great grandchildren He grew up at the family home on the Tyrone Avery road in Monongalia County WV. He attended Easton Elementary school through the sixth grade until 1946 and moved to University High school in and graduated in1951. During his high school days he participated in several plays and was on the football and wrestling teams. In 1951, he won the West Virginia 165 pound state wrestling championship. Upon graduation from high school, he attended West Virginia University but left school in 1952, where he pursued a career in the US Army, where he served in the Airborne and signal corps, followed by employment with C&P Telephone. After a long and rewarding career with C&P Telephone he retired as Director of Premise Services in 1992, with 40 years' service. In 1995, he began volunteer work with AARP as a Member of the Capital City Task Force. He later served as chairman of the task force and in 1998 was the chairman of the State Legislative Committee. He was the State President of AARP West Virginia from 2000-2006 and helped to develop the new volunteer operational structure. In 2005, he was awarded the Andrus Award for community Service from AARP. Additionally, he was an active member of Toastmaster's International, Charleston region, from 1974-2006, where he won numerous awards. In recent years, he has continued to serve the community as Adjutant General and Finance Director of the American Foreign Legion Post 2 of Morgantown, the WV Medical Institute Board of Directors (promoting improved healthcare in a multistate region), WV State Transportation Department, WV State wide Independent Living Council and remained an active lobbyist for AARP on legislation to support Seniors. He was also the 2011 Chairman for the Monongalia County Celebration of America. Mr. Davis was a loyal attendee of the Cheat Lake United Methodist Church and remained a member of the Elk Valley Advent Christian Church, Big Chimney, WV. He was active as a Sunday School Superintendent and teacher, as well as, choir member. He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph Washington Davis and Lula Agnes (Loughery) Davis. Additionally, Mr. Davis became a widower in 1999 with the loss of his first wife Billie Jo Hart of Morgantown and Elkview, WV. Also preceding him in death was his infant son George Ralph Davis, brothers - Edward Walton Davis, Harry Gordon Davis, Howard Gail Davis, Joseph Junior Davis, and James Warren Davis - and his sisters - Marie Isabell Dalton, Laverna May Davis, and the twins Mary June Davis and Mary Jane Davis. Friends may call at the Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home on Monday August 1, 2011 from 5pm until time of funeral services at 7pm with Rev. Michael Rowe officiating. Friends may call Hafer Funeral Home, Elkview, WV on Wednesday August 3, 2011 from 11am until time of funeral services at noon with Pastor Roy Boyd officiating. Burial will follow at the Elk Hills Memorial Park with military honors. In lieu of flowers, please send donation to the following: American Legion Monongalia Post 2, P.O.
