Virgil Melton Davis, 93, of Morgantown, formerly of North Grosvenordale, CT, went home to be with his Lord on May 2, 2026. He was born October 2, 1932 in Wendle, WV, a son of Loran and Juanita Davis. He was a graduate of University High School, class of 1951. On July 11, 1953, he married his childhood sweetheart, Norma 'Maxine' Trout and they celebrated 57 years of marriage until her passing on November 15, 2010. He missed her every day and looked forward to being reunited with her in heaven.
Virgil proudly served his country as a Corporal in the United States Army and was stationed at Camp Atterbury, Indiana, from 1953-1955. During his service, he received numerous recognitions for his marksmanship, drove a halftrack, and did a tour in Germany. He often said that he went into the Army a boy and came out a man. After the service, he apprenticed as a mold maker at Star City Glass and moved to CT in January 1963 to work at Anchor Glass, where he had a 42-year career. He excelled at his craft, was a union leader, was the guy everyone came to for advice, and made friends for life in the mold shop.
Virgil had a passion for life and nothing mattered more to him than caring for his family. He loved the outdoors and was the happiest when he was gardening (especially cultivating his 'Virgil Pink' tomatoes), cutting grass, fishing, hunting, generally puttering around working on any kind of project, riding his motorcycle, and swinging on his porch watching his special blue birds. He was a natural 'Mr. Fix-It, and anything that landed on his workbench broken would be put back together in perfect working condition. He had a goofy sense of humor and was admired by all for his energy, stamina, and abilities - even as he aged, people commonly said he was amazing! He was always available to give anyone a hand, was a wonderful neighbor, HOA project approver, and lived independently until his final breath (exactly the way he wanted it).
He is survived by his only daughter, Alicia Lue Davis, and her partner, Kate Houlihan of West Hartford, CT. Kate's daughter Shannon and her husband Jack Morrison of Colorado also held a very special place in his heart. 'Uncle Virgil' is also survived by an extended family of nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews who loved him dearly. He was especially grateful for his niece Brenda Simpson and nephew Thomas 'Pete' Simpson, who cared for him like a father.
Virgil was the remaining patriarch of his family and was preceded in death by his devoted wife, Maxine; parents, Reverend Loran and Juanita Davis; two sisters, Betty Eddy, along with husband Mark and nephew Roger, and Dawn Marie Morgan and husband Paul; one brother, Dudley Davis, and wife Edna Mae of Ohio.
Family and friends will gather at the Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home, 10 South High Street, Morgantown, WV 26501, on Wednesday, May 6, from 4-7 PM, and again on Thursday, May 7, from 10 AM until the time of services at 11 AM, with Pastor Dan Meadows officiating. Burial will follow at the Simpson Cemetery, Simpson, WV, with military graveside rites.
