Stanley Nels

Stanley John Nels Stanley John Nels, 86 of Morgantown passed away Monday, December 10, 2012 at the Monongalia General Hospital. He was born March 30, 1926 at Pursglove, WV, the son of the late Frank and Anna Salga Nels. Stanley was a member of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church where he was a member of the choir. After graduation from Sherman High School, Stanley served in the U S Navy from 1944-1946 as a radioman. He was stationed in Guam, Saipan and Iwo Jima. He received the Pacific Theater Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, Commendation Ribbon, Victory Medal and Presidential Unit Citation. After serving his country in the Navy, he went to WVU under the GI Bill where he graduated from the School of Journalism. In 1952, he along with his friend, Joe Fasching, started the Westover Observer .Since retiring in 1987 from WVU with 29 years of service, he stayed active in the church and the Pursglove community. He is survived by his wife of 61 years Jean Ware Nels, a sister in law Nellie Nels of Westover, two grandchildren Jason Nels and Jennifer Aberson and husband Jeremy, also a great granddaughter Emily. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Randall Nels, brothers George, William, Steve, Charles, and Edward Nels, sisters Anna Menear, Mary Zini, Helen Nels and Sophia Kuhn. Friends may call at the Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home on Thursday, December 13, 2012 from 2-4 and 6-8pm . Mr. Nels will lie in repose on Friday at St. Mary' s Catholic Church from 10am until the time of Mass of Christian Burial at 11am with Rev. Fr. John DiBacco officiating. Burial will follow in the East Oak Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Ursula's Food Pantry, PO Box 18, Pursglove, WV 26546.
