Ruth Arlene ‘Ruthie’ McCourt, 81, of Morgantown, passed away peacefully on June 23, 2017 at her home surrounded by her family. She fought cancer for more than three decades but found her wings to fly her home. Ruth was born in Webster Springs, WV, daughter to the late Lawsel and Nanna Carpenter Tharp.
Ruth’s journey began in Webster Springs and life would take her to Akron, OH where she and her husband operated a small service station for many years. She returned to WV and worked at Heck’s and retired from KMART.
Ruth had a fighting spirit and a will to live. That same tenacity would give her the strength to care for her family after the death of her husband some 45 years ago. She kept a home both inside and out with little help from anyone. One of her favorite things to do was to mow her own grass and sometimes even her neighbors. Her great sense of humor and quick wit will be missed by those closest to her.
Recently, you may have read of Miss Ruth’s love of Alan Jackson. She had been granted her wish to meet him in person. All arrangements had been made, however, she left this world just one day shy fulfilling that dream.
Ruth is survived by her five loving children; Brenda McCourt, David McCourt and wife Susan all of Morgantown, Arlin McCourt and wife Louise of Chesapeake, VA, Doyle McCourt and wife Cindy of Clearwater, FL and Bernard MCourt and wife Kim of Kingwood, WV; 10 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren; one brother James Tharp of Saint Augustine, FL and three sisters, Betty Wallo, Joyce Conrad and Shirley Thomas all of Morgantown.
In addition to parents, Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Coye Bernard McCourt; one grandson, Jonathan Doyle McCourt and two sisters, Genean Lamb and Carol L. Rose.
Cremation was arranged by the Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home.
Friends will be received at the Morgantown Church of Christ, Scott Ave., Morgantown on Saturday, July 1, 2017 from 1pm until the celebration of life memorial service at 4pm with Pastor Matt Lowe officiating. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family at the Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations in memory of Ruth A. McCourt be considered to the Susan G. Komen, Dept. 41831 P.O. Box 650309 Dallas, TX 75265.
