Robert Cunningham, 91, of Stewartstown passed away November 11, 2014 with his family by his bedside at Windy Hill in Kingwood, WV. He was the son of Fred and Nellie Cunningham (both deceased) of Gladesville and was born on July 22, 1923. Bob was a retired coal miner, and farmed on his Stewartstown farm until the age of 80. He loved family, hunting, fishing, and spending time on the farm. He was a long standing member of the West Virginia Farm Bureau, and was honored to receive the Distinguished Famer of the Year by that organization in 2011. Bob was a member of the Kingwood VFW and a veteran of the Navy. He served in World War II in both the European and Pacific theaters, taking part in the Allied invasion of France at Normandy on D-Day. In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years Doris Atkins Cunningham, a brother Bill Cunningham, and a sister Anna Clare Thorn. He is survived by one sister - Patricia Taylor of Gladesville; four children - Ron Cunningham of Gladesville, and Janet Judd, Joyce Leedy, and Eric Cunningham, all of Stewartstown; four grandchildren - Lindsey Trickett of Bethesda Maryland, Brittany Trickett of Deerfield Beach Florida, Grant Umble of Stewartstown, and Scott Umble of Morgantown:, and five great-granchildren - Silas Umble, Sierra Umble, Harrison Umble, Easton Lederman, and Porter Lederman. The family would like to express their thanks to Windy Hill, Hospice Care of Preston County, and Dr. Julia Ramberg. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that friends and family take a small child fishing, or listen to a veteran's story. Friends may call at Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home in Morgantown on Saturday, November 15 from 1-4:30pm and 6-8pm or at the Forks of Cheat Baptist Church from 2-3pm on Sunday. Service will be held at 3pm Sunday at the church with the Minister Chuck Bowers presiding, with burial immediately following the service at the Forks of Cheat cemetery with military honors conducted by the Preston County VFWs, Preston County VVA, Chapter 977 and the USN Honor Guard, Mid-Atlantic Region.. A dinner for friends and family will be held after the burial at the Steartstown Community Building at 2568 Stewartstown Road.
