Rick Coles

William “Rick” Coles 62, of Morgantown, passed away on Saturday, May 14, 2016, at the Monongalia General Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Rick was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend who could brighten anyone’s day with his infectious smile. He was born July 22, 1953 in Wheeling, WV, the son of Helen Clark Coles of Wheeling and the late Charles Coles, Sr.
Rick graduated from Wheeling High School in 1971, where his basketball legacy began. Averaging 33.7 points and 22 rebounds, Rick was a 1969 OVAC AAA Champion, a 1970-71 Sunkist Coach and Athlete All American, named to the Ohio Valley AA Division all-conference basketball team twice consecutively, named to First Team Big All-State, as well as the State High School Player of the Year by the Morgantown Touchdown Club. Rick attended West Virginia University on a basketball scholarship, where he had 45 assists, 14 points average per game, and 71.6% free throw average his freshman year. After starting a family, Rick returned to West Virginia University and obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology August 16, 1985. Rick was a former employee of Sterling Faucet, Chestnut Ridge Hospital, Valley Mental Health Center, and Ramada Inn.
Rick is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Debra Coles, two daughters Tiffany Barnett and spouse Matthew of Morgantown, Kristy Pratt and spouse Duane Jr. of Masontown, PA, an additional daughter Tammy Andre of Atlanta, Georgia, and a son Anthony Savage of Wheeling. He is also survived by his mother, Helen Coles, two brothers, Charles Coles Jr, and David (Theresa) Coles, and one sister, Deborah Boone all of Wheeling, 12 grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one brother Thomas Coles. He will be dearly missed and eternally live in the hearts and memories of all those who knew him.
Friends may be received at the Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 17, 2016 from 2– 4 & 6 – 8pm and again on Wednesday from 10am until time of services at 11am with Pastor Junius Lewis officiating. Burial will follow in the Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens.
