Richard Joseph Herstine

Richard Joseph ‘Dick’ Herstine, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 10, 2025, surrounded by family. Dick was born in Morgantown, WV on September 7, 1935, son of the late Richard D. and Ethel G. Mansberger Herstine.


He is survived by his best friend and beloved wife Shirley A. Mills Herstine and three fantastic daughters and spouses: Karen and husband Joe Polce, Morgantown; Karla and husband Glenn Bolyard, Reedsville; Ricki and wife Melissa Barley, Charlotte, NC; and one son Brian and wife Shana Pancoast, Morgantown; grandchildren Joe Jr. and wife Amber Polce, Jacksonville Beach, FL; Landon Polce, Tony and Jennifer Polce, Salisbury, NC; Kerry and husband Chris Westfall, Amy and husband Cory Acuff, Sammie and wife Kendra Polce, Morgan Polce, Andrew Barley, Abby Barley, Isaac Pancoast, Sofia Pancoast and Samuel Pancoast; great grandchildren Elaina Smith, Ethan Polce, Dylan Polce, John Westfall, Travis Westfall, Sydnee Polce, Avihanna (Avi) Polce, Tony Polce, Maddox Polce, Harlyn Acuff, Caroline Acuff, and Sante Polce; loving sister Gloria and brother in-law Arthur McClain of Newtown, CT, nieces Susan Evanuska, Nancy Patrick, Amy Naughton, and nephew David McClain; nephew and niece Robert Jr. and Virginia Mills. Thank you to special friends Bill and Janet McMillen. Thank you Shirlean for being in my life-you are a special lady.


Richard served as a Military Police in the U.S. Marine Corps serving in Japan, Puerto Rico and other bases in the U.S. He was a past member and officer of Earl Anderson Marine Corps League No. 342. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, a past board member and volunteer at the Community kitchen at Trinity, and driver for the Meals On Wheels program. He was a past member of the Elks.


During the 50's and 60's he was employed as a projectionist at all local indoor and outdoor theaters in the area and was past member and officer of IATSE No. 578. He served as general manager of Cinema 1 & 2 at the old Hills Shopping Center in Star City until its closing in 1984, and also as a supervisor for Gardner Theaters of Wheeling, WV. He was the owner of the Blue Horizon Drive-In until its closing in 1986. In 2000, he retired as General Manager of Ramada Inn and Conference Center.


Richard enjoyed woodworking, gardening, cooking, and collecting and listening to music. He enjoyed traveling with his love to England, France, Greece, Turkey, Cancun, Cozumel, as well as other states and cities in the U.S.


Family and friends will gather at the Fred Jenkins Funeral Home on Saturday, July 19, 2025, from 10 AM until the time of service at Noon with The Rev. Kirk Haas. Honors will be rendered at the funeral home by the Earl Anderson Marine Corps League prior to the services at noon.  Graveside services will be held at East Oak Grove Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Monongalia County Honor Guard and the USMC, Honor Guard.
