Ralph Walter Phillips, Sr.

Ralph Walter Phillips, Sr., 89 of Richard, WV passed away Sunday August 12, 2012 at Ruby Memorial Hospital surrounded by his family. He was born June 1, 1923 in Morgantown, son of the late Walter and Ida May Phillips. Raised on a farm on Tyrone Avery Road, he left to join the Army and became a member of the 749 th Army Tank Battalion during World War II. After being honorably discharged from the Army he worked for Hagans Ice Cream Company his first job. He then worked in the cafeteria at the old Dupont plant, as a riveter in Akron, OH, cab driver, where he drove his own Kelly cab and a miner at Canyon for eight years. He then became a deputy under then Sheriff Clarence Johnson after which he was elected constable of Monongalia County. In 1950 he started a used car business in Dellslow. Then he bought a tow truck and Ralph's Used Cars and Towing has been in business ever since, having moved to its current location in Richard. "I like to cook," he always said. "His Place" combined Richard Diner and American Legion Post 174 and Bingo Hall in Richard, where he could always be found to talk, share stories and reminisce. Ralph is survived by one daughter, Sherry Phillips of Richard, two sons, Ralph W. Phillips, Jr., and fiancé Joyce Hawkins both of Morgantown, Roger Phillips and wife Rachel of Cheat Lake; grandchildren, Chana Duley and husband Michael of Morgantown, Corey Corbin and wife Deborah of Louisville, KY, Brittney Phillips of Latrobe, PA, Bethany Miller and husband Andrew of Fairmont, Sarah Bishop and husband Sean of Morgantown, Annie Reynolds of Morgantown; great grand pappy to his pride and joys, Colton Duley, Alec Duley Harper Grace Bishop and Jackson Miller. In addition to his parents Ralph was preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years Rebecca Becky' Phillips; two brothers James E. Phillips and Dale E. Phillips and one sister Thelma Irene Phillips. The family would like to thank all of dad's friends, who thought of him as Pap' including; Edward and Cathy White, his helpers at the legion and Trina and Randy DeBerry and Helen Yonkers. On Saturday night Karaoke you closed with Farewell Party,' little did anyone know, you really only meant Farewell.' Friends may call at the Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home on Wednesday August 15, 2012 from 4-9pm and again on Thursday from noon until time of services at 1pm with Pastor James Freeland officiating. Burial will follow at the Pierpont Cemetery, Canyon Road, with military funeral honors conducted by the Westover VFW Post 9916 and WV Honor Guard, Camp Dawson.
