Nicholi (Nick) Callas, 75, died Saturday, February 10, 2018 at Sundale Nursing Home in Morgantown following an extended illness.
He leaves his wife of 54 years, Janet Lea (Yaromy) Callas; his sister Mary Lewis of Morgantown and husband, Don; his elder son Christopher and his wife Elizabeth Amandus of Charleston, West Virginia and granddaughters Audrey, Sylvia and Vanessa and step-grandson Zeke; his younger son Creig and his wife Jodi of Washington, Pennsylvania, and grandson Colby and granddaughter Amelia.
Born on March 12, 1942 in Morgantown, he was the son of Harry and Julia Callas and spent his adult life in Morgantown, Mount Vernon, Ohio and Point Marion, Pennsylvania.
Nick graduated from Morgantown High School in 1960, where he played clarinet and sousaphone in the Mohigan concert and marching bands. After marrying in 1963, he served with the U.S. Army 25th Infantry Division in Vietnam and at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico.
Nick worked at the Beaumont Glass Factory for many years. After earning a business degree from the West Virginia Business College in Morgantown, he served as Beaumont’s production manager, supervising the plant’s entire production in the 1970s and early 1980s, and then managing the discontinuation of operations following its closure.
Nick was a quiet, unassuming man with a kind disposition. Beloved by his many friends; he loved people, and his good-natured candor often charmed those around him, loved ones and strangers alike. His younger years were filled with bowling (including a perfect-score games), golf (including a hole in one), card games, and other social pastimes that he enriched with his warmth. These positive qualities persisted even as health problems progressively narrowed his world during the last years of his life. His thoughtfulness toward others was a hallmark of his character, even surprising his wife with a rose on the day of his death. He was a devoted husband to his loving wife, Janet, throughout their 54-year marriage. He will be sorely missed.
Friends and family may visit from 12pm to 2pm and 6pm-8pm on February 13th at the Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home in Morgantown. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 11:00am on February 14th with Pastor Janice Smith officiating, followed by burial at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Point Marion, PA with military honors.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Nick’s name may be made to The American Heart Association or the Disabled American Veterans.
