Nancy Jo Wise

February 13, 1943 — August 15, 2019

Nancy Jo Wise, 76, of Morgantown, died Thursday, Aug. 15, 2019, surrounded by her family. She was born on Feb. 13, 1943, a daughter of the late Ralph and Elizabeth Harbaugh. Nancy is survived by her husband of 49 years, Thomas Wise; daughter Michelle (Jonathan) Dixon, of Morgantown; son Mark (Stacy) Wise, of Morgantown; granddaughters Courtney (Caleb) Moore, Megan (Cameron Stoldt) Dixon, Hailey Wise, all of Morgantown; grandson Frank Wise, of Morgantown; brother Rick (Stephanie) Harbaugh, of Morgantown; brother-in-law John (Darlena) Wise, of Morgantown; sisters-in-law Nancy Cutlip and Debra Wise, of Morgantown; and many special nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her parents, Nancy was preceded in death by her dear sister, Judy Stiles, and her niece, Denise Stiles. Nancy retired from WVU as a pastry chef at Arnold Hall. Following her retirement, she spent many years volunteering at Brookhaven Elementary School, where her eldest granddaughters attended. Her favorite volunteering activities included working the school lunch line and decorating the school's display windows for every season. As a volunteer, Nancy became a "Meme" to many local children and staff members who enjoyed chatting with her at school. Nancy was one of WVU Football's most loyal, loving fans. During her over 30 years as a season ticket holder, Nancy attended nearly every home game with her children, grandchildren, extended family and friends, and was always the Mountaineers" biggest and most faithful cheerleader, win or loss. She was especially proud of her granddaughter, Courtney, a member of the "Pride of West Virginia" WVU marching band. In addition to Mountaineer Football, Meme enjoyed spending time with her family and friends boating on Cheat Lake during the summer months and traveling to the Outer Banks. She also enjoyed planting and caring for her flowers during the spring and summer. During the colder months, Nancy kept active with her girlfriends at a weekly water aerobics class at Healthworks. Nancy loved the holiday season, and took special pride in delighting the Brookhaven community with her annual display of Christmas lights. She also loved to celebrate the milestones of her loved ones, and used her cooking and baking talents to prepare everything from birthday dinners and birthday cakes to wedding cakes. Nancy's last culinary masterpiece was a wedding cake for her granddaughter, Courtney. Nancy wore many hats, but all who knew her would agree that her "Meme" hat was her favorite. Nancy's greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren whom she adored. In addition to their countless sleepovers, baking lessons, playdates in the park and at the pool, Nancy loved cheering for her grandchildren in all their activities. In recent years, she traveled to California to see her granddaughter, Courtney, march in the Tournament of Roses parade, as well as Orlando to see her granddaughter, Megan, compete at Dance Worlds and to see her granddaughter, Hailey, compete at the D2 Summit for all-star cheerleading. Most recently, she enjoyed watching her grandson, Frank, play flag football and basketball in Morgantown. A WVU-themed celebration of Nancy's life will be held on Monday, Aug. 19, 2019, in Brookhaven. In lieu of flowers, donations in Nancy's honor may be made to WVU Children's Hospital.
