Nancy Jo Roder

November 18, 1944 — August 2, 2023

Nancy Roder,78, longtime resident of Cheat Lake, WV, passed away August 2, 2023, peacefully at home. Nancy was born in Charleston, WV to the late Denzil and Loretta Harper on November 18, 1944.

Nancy is survived by her beloved husband of 59 years, Mike Roder; son, Michael Roder (Lisa) of Hollywood, Fl and his daughters Taylor and Madison; daughter, Missy Barnett (Barney) of Raleigh, NC and her daughter Emma of Aiken, SC; brother, Richard Harper (Marla) of Chesterfield, Illinois; uncle, Richard Dunlap (Judy) of Huntington, WV; cousin, Elizabeth Brannum of Huntsville, AL; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Nancy was an alumni of WVU obtaining a Masters in Public Health. She was a former educator at MonGeneral Hospital for many years; also working at NIOSH, Monongalia County Health Department, and private contractor for WV data collection and analysis of WV Medical data. She retired in 2004.

Nancy's passion for expanding knowledge was evident in everything that she did in life to include, being an educator to pass on the same passion to others. Through the years, she has made lifelong friends working in various organizations as a volunteer.

She was a Paramedic volunteer with Monongalia EMS from when the county started EMS services.

As a lover of all creatures, Nancy wanted them to be loved and cared for also. She volunteered with animal organizations - West Virginia Raptor Rehabilitation Center in Fairmont and the Great Pyrenees Rescue (where she adopted her fur child - Tilly). She was instrumental in co-founding the ReTails store by M-SNAP (Mountaineer Spay Neuter Assistance Program) in Morgantown, WV.

Nancy loved gardening, and became a certified Master Gardener through the Monongalia County Extension Service of WVU, volunteering several years at the WV State Fair in Lewisburg at the WV exhibit. The Master Gardeners planted and maintained public gardens around and in Morgantown.

Nancy was always willing to share her home with animals in need. Giving a flower or plants with smiles and advice from her garden with family and friends.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to WV Caring Hospice and Home Instead for their support in her final days.

A memorial gathering will be held at Fred Jenkins Funeral Home on Saturday August 26, 2023 from 2-4 PM followed by brief comments by Chaplain Ed Horvath.
