Mitchell Lee Turner, 85, passed from this life at Mon Health Medical Center on Monday, December 11, 2023 with his loving wife by his side. He was born April 16, 1938 in Morgantown, WV to the late Harold and Maude Turner. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his only son, David Harold Turner, and his brother Bryce Turner.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Jean Miller Myers Turner, his step-daughter Karen L. Thorn and husband Ron, four grandchildren, Nathan Turner, Aaron Turner and wife Ayla, Shawn Thorn Hamrick and husband Sam, and Jason Thorn. One great grandchild Tyler Sandy and husband Titus, one great great grandchild Tillie Jean Sandy and one daughter-in-law, Virginia (Ginny) Turner.
Mitch was a 1956 graduate of Morgantown High School and a US Navy veteran, serving in the late 50s and early 60s where he got his start as a machinist. After his time in the Navy, he worked at Sterling Faucet and, until his retirement, at Superior Hydraulics as a machinist. After retiring, he became a master woodworker and operated a small business fabricating, repairing, and refinishing various wood products. He also worked for HealthWorks in Morgantown maintaining and repairing various pieces of equipment used in rehabilitation. Mitch particularly enjoyed guiding his many friends in completing projects in his woodshop.
Mitch and Jean particularly enjoyed canoeing and took several wilderness canoe trips with friends to northern Ontario and Quebec. He enjoyed listening to folk, bluegrass, and old time music, snow skiing, bicycling, hiking, and was involved in Boy Scouts with his son. He also learned to fly a single engine airplane. But most of all, Mitch was proud of his children, grandchildren and his extended family. He was quick to befriend just about anyone he encountered, from many walks of life. He will be missed for his expertise in the shop, his patience in teaching others the intricacies of woodwork, his sense of humor, and his genuine friendship. He will be missed by many.
Mitch's family would like to recognize the excellent care he received while hospitalized at Mon General Hospital and from the staff of WV Caring. In addition, the family would like to thank the many friends and neighbors for all their love and support with his care.
Friends and family are invited to gather at Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home on Friday, December 15, 2023 from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM with a memorial service immediately following.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Mitch's memory payable to Boy Scout Troop 52 at 1831 Speedway Avenue, Fairmont, WV 26554.
