Mildred Marie ‘Millie’ Hackney, 95, of Morgantown, died peacefully on Saturday, November 14, 2020, at the Embrace Hospice House in Myrtle Beach, SC. She was born June 26, 1925, in Denver, WV, Preston County, a daughter to James and Louisa Hershman Martin.
Mildred was a member of the Sabra United Methodist Church, where she was very involved. Everyone knew she made the best pies and often made 20-30 pies for the church Bazaar. Mildred made quilts, grew a vegetable garden, and canned her harvest each year. She was proud to keep a home and raise her three children and grandchildren all while working as a seamstress downtown, multiple grocers, and later retiring from Giant Eagle.
During her retirement, she enjoyed taking cruises with her good friend Joy Williams. She continued quilting and remained involved in her community serving with the Senior Mons, where she volunteered for various events. She was once a member of the Red Hat Society and was active in the democratic process. She would volunteer to drive friends, neighbors, and even strangers to vote on election day.
Mildred was the last surviving member of her family and was preceded in death by her parents, James, and Louisa Martin; her husband John Ralph Hackney, Sr.; one daughter Patricia Mullenax, son-in-law, Robert Neil Daft, Sr., and 13 siblings, Charles, Russell, William, Edward, John, Cora Mamie, Lanah, Gertrude, Betty Rudell, Nona, and Connie.
She leaves to cherish her memory, one son, John Ralph Hackney, Jr., and wife Elizabeth of Morgantown and Winchester, VA; daughter Shirley Daft of Conway, SC; grandchildren, John Hackney, III, David Hackney, Matthew Hackney, Stuart Hackney, Robert Daft, Jr, Jonathan Daft, Jacqueline Forrester, Devona Coffey, and Kevin Mullenax. Also, surviving are 18 great-grandchildren, ten great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at the Fred Jenkins Funeral Home on Thursday, Nov. 19, 2020, from 4 to 8 PM. Funeral services will be held on Friday, Nov. 20, 2020, at 11 AM with Dr. Jonathan R. Daft officiating. She will be laid to rest beside her husband at the Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens.
