Meyno Saffron, 95, of Morgantown, died peacefully at his home on Wednesday, June 19, 2013. He was born on November 17, 1917 in Centerville, Pennsylvania, of the late John and Jennie Nowihekoff Saffron. He was a 1935 graduate of University High School, went on to work at Pursglove Coal Mining Company until 1942 when he joined the U.S. Army, serving until 1946. Meyno was a recipient of the Purple Heart Medal for wounds received in action while serving in Northern France. Meyno returned to Morgantown, retiring from Consolidation Coal Company after 27 years in 1974; then worked as a clerk with the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement in 1980. Meyno was known for his love of gardening and canning. He was an avid reader, enjoyed music of all types, especially the Big Band era, and made frequent trips to Wheeling Downs and The Meadows with family and friends. Meyno is survived by his three sons: John Michael Saffron, Mark Russell Saffron, Scott Meyno Saffron and wife Chris; four grandchildren: Nicole Saffron O'Hara, Michael Saffron, Matthew Saffron and Whitley Saffron; two sisters, Mary Jane Lawson and Nina Haines; and his close friend Alice "Babe" Raley. Meyno was preceded in death by his brother Russell, who died in 1942 at the Pursglove #2 mine explosion and his wife Anna Pozega Saffron, who died in 1991. Private services for family were held on Saturday, June 22. He was laid to rest at East Oak Grove Cemetery, Morgantown, West Virginia with full military honors conducted by Westover VFW Post 9916 and the WVANG, Camp Dawson.
