Mary Morris Lemmon

January 24, 1933 — December 13, 2021

Mary Morris Lemmon of Morgantown passed peacefully at Evergreen Assisted Living, following a two-year battle with dementia at the age of 88. She would have wanted everyone to know that she did not pass due to anything COVID-related. Mary was born January 24, 1933, in Grafton, a daughter of Ira L. and Settie E. McCauley Morris. She was a graduate of Grafton High School and was employed as an executive secretary for the USDA, Farmers Home Administration. Mary was a member of the First Baptist Church, of Morgantown where she was involved in many of their activities. She participated in many interests over the years including Meals on Wheels and the Red Hat Society. She also served on the board of the Red Cross. She gave gifts of time and money to several ministries, especially the Bus Ministry of the Oak Grove Baptist Church in Taylor County and the Salvation Army. Her sense of style was second to none. She knew how to make an entrance and always dressed for the occasion, most of the time appropriately clad in the colors of the holiday. She was loud, proud, and not shy to share her political views. She had the greatest sense of humor and charming wit. The world was more colorful because of Mary. She will be sadly missed by her nieces, Joyce L. Compton of Morgantown and Laura (Frank) Demasi; brother-in-law Larry (Patty) Lemmon, all of Grafton; numerous great-nieces and nephews and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ira and Settie Morris; her husband, Howard W. Lemmon; one sister, Alice Compton; sister-in-law Sandra Lemmon and two nephews, Blaine and Roger Compton. It shouldn’t surprise anyone that Mary gave specific instructions about her services. She didn’t want a funeral, but rather something simple. To honor her request, friends and family are invited to the Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home from noon until 1 PM on Friday, December 17, 2021, to visit and share memories. Those who wish may join in the procession to her final place of rest at the Oak Grove Cemetery, Independence, WV, for a graveside service conducted by Pastor Dan Meadows. Please consider a donation in her memory to the Oak Grove Baptist Church Bus Ministry 1081 Oak Grove Road, Independence, WV.
