Mary Jane Lawson

August 2, 1933 — June 4, 2026

Mary Jane Lawson, a beloved daughter, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2026, at the age of 92. Born in Morgantown, West Virginia, on August 2, 1933, to John and Jenny Saffron, Mary Jane lived a life full of joy, love, and cherished moments.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Jo (Dick) Shahan of Morgantown, and her son, Joseph (Kim) Lawson, also of Morgantown. Mary Jane's legacy continues through her grandchildren: Rich Shahan, Christy (Jeff) Belan, Joanie Ilori, Sam Ilori, Joseph Lawson, and Rachelle Lawson. She is also remembered fondly by her son-in-law, Julius Ilori of Clinton, MD, and four great-grandchildren.

Mary Jane was preceded in death by her loving husband, Joseph Lawson, her daughter Laura Ilori, and her granddaughter Shelly Shahan. She also rejoined her beloved brothers, Russell and Meyno Saffron, and her sister, Nina Haines.

Mary Jane attended University High School and embraced a vibrant career. She worked for a time at a local glass factory before retiring from Mon General as a surgical tech in 1987. Her spirit was not confined to her work; she was known for her adventurous soul, enjoying travels to Las Vegas, Atlantic City, and numerous bus trips to Nemacolin Resort. A true lover of life, she filled her days with fun and laughter, enjoying game shows on TV, bowling with her league, and indulging in her hobbies of pottery, crocheting, and knitting colorful afghans to share with her family. Her love for Polka music and the joy of attending polka festivals brought her immense happiness.

The family invites all those whose lives were touched by Mary Jane to join them in celebrating her remarkable life.

Friends and family will gather on Monday, June 8, 2026 at the Fred Jenkins Funeral Home from 2-4 & 6-8 PM and again on Tuesday from 10 AM until time of services at 11 AM with Rev. Christy Johnson officiating. She will rest beside her husband at the East Oak Grove Cemetery.
