Kristin Rae Mascioli died on July 21 at the age of 61 after a 12-year battle with breast cancer. She is survived by her eldest son Matthew (30), his wife Janet Ha, and their baby daughter Jiyon Rae Mascioli; her middle son Alex (28); and her youngest son Andrew (25) and his partner Ashley Thompson. She also leaves behind her partner John Lewis and her two sisters, Valerie Hooper of Long Island, NY, and Carrie Ramsey of Martinsburg, WV, as well as many other close family and friends. She was born on December 3, 1953 in Grantsville, WV, the eldest of three daughters of Ray and Dr. Rita Karen (Raines) Waldo, who both preceded her in death. The family moved often in her childhood, and she eventually graduated from Martinsburg High School. She went on to attend Shepherd University and receive both her B.A. and Masters in education from West Virginia University. She was a lifelong educator, who taught special education students in several West Virginia counties for 35 years until her retirement in May of 2014. She was proud to have taught for the vast majority of her long career in Preston County. Passionately dedicated to her work, she was known to wear mismatched earrings on a daily basis to delight her students, challenging them to be more creative and observant. She was loath to leave a vacation destination without picking up a local paper to take back as classroom material. Her love of travel flourished with the years. She held dear memories from her weeks spent in Germany, China, Ireland, Australia, Greece, and Puerto Rico. The rocks she brought home from the beaches of Taormina, Italy, were among her most prized possessions. She loved the beaches of her homeland, too, and ritually visited one every summer with her sisters, her cousins Linda Lee and Allyson, her aunt Leslie, and her niece Sasha. When she was not traveling, permanent fixtures in her routine included Sunday worship at Cornerstone Church in Kingwood, water zumba classes, and weekly outings with her close friends to a lunch and movie. Even during her busiest years, she never missed the chance to go to a concert by Celtic Woman or the Hubcaps, celebrate a friend's birthday with a themed party at Rio Grande, or show camaraderie at a cancer support group. In her last days she saw several of her dreams come true, including welcoming a grandchild into the world, seeing the Rolling Stones in concert, and sitting in the audience of the national spelling bee in Washington DC. She was deeply grateful to her friends and family who took care of her in her illness, especially to her son Alex, who was her primary caregiver for the last year and a half. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held this Saturday, August 1, at 1p.m. in the main sanctuary of Kingdom Evangelical Methodist Church in Westover, WV. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Mary Babb Randolph Cancer Center at P.O. Box 9300, 1 Medical Center Drive, Morgantown, WV 26506-9300. Checks can be made payable to the WVU Foundation. Please add Kristin's name to the memo line. Cards and condolences can be sent to Kristin's family at 3211 Lemley St., Morgantown, WV 26508.
