On April 11, 2023, Judith Ann Gibbs (Stanko) was freed from her beleaguered body and made gloriously whole. Judy was 79 years of age.
Judy is survived by her husband, Richard; her children, Amy (Brad), Shelley (David), Cheryl, and Richie (Jessica); her sister Linda; and her grandchildren Camon, Caleb, Ethan, Lucas, Alayna, Elizabeth, Kai, Molly, Lila, Micah, Luke, Kate, Lincoln, David, Leannah, Anneliese, Benjamin, Georgia, Joshua, and Vivienne. She was preceded in death by her parents, George & Georgia Stanko, and two precious babes.
Judy was born on June 10, 1943, in Charleroi, PA. She graduated from Belmar High School in 1961 and attended California State College (PA), graduating in 1965 with a Bachelor of Science in secondary education and mathematics. She taught at Grove City College (PA) and was awarded a National Science Foundation grant which she fulfilled at the University of Georgia, and after returning to West Virginia University, completed a Masters Degree, edited textbooks, and taught mathematics in a distinguished career spanning nearly forty years.
Judy was a self-proclaimed “mountain mama”, a WVU sports enthusiast, and a friend to all. Although Judy taught with distinctive skill, her true passions were her faith, her family, her friends, and helping found a Christian school. She was a marvelous woman and will be remembered for her profound contributions and her unwavering faith.
Her family and friends invite you to join in celebrating Judy and rejoicing in her newfound freedom and joy. Visitation will be held at Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home on Sunday, April 16, 2023 from 2 pm – 6 pm. Visitation will continue on Monday at CMA Church of Morgantown 308 Elmhurst St. Morgantown, WV 26505 from 3pm until the time of funeral service at 4pm with a dinner to follow. Judy will be laid to rest at WV National Cemetery on Tuesday at 11 am. Those wishing to be a part of the funeral procession are asked to be at Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home no later than 9:45am on Tuesday.
In lieu of flowers, a namesake scholarship fund is being established to encourage women pursuing STEM degrees. However, flowers are still welcomed at the funeral home.
