Joseph Vasil

Joseph "Joe" Vasil, 90, of Cassville, passed away peacefully on April 19 at Mon General Hospital surrounded by his family and friends. He was born January 15, 1924 in Ronco, PA, the son of the late James and Julia Joy Vasil. He attended University High School. He then enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Following his training at Paris Island, he served in World War II in the Pacific Theatre as a demolition specialist. He received the Purple Heart during battle in the Marshall Islands. Joe was a devoted husband to Mary Helen Milovich Vasil, his wife of 64 years. He worked as a butcher and in area coal mines including Humphrey No 7 the last mine he worked. In 1961, President Kennedy approved his appointment as Postmaster of Cassville, a position he held until his disability retirement in 1978. Joe was a member of the former St Ursula's Catholic Church and attended mass at St Mary's Church. Joe was a member of the United Mine Workers, and lifetime member of VFW Post 9916 in Westover, Knights of Columbus, and Disabled Veterans. He was actively involved in the U S Marine Corp Veterans League. His interests included spending time with his family and friends, playing cards, fishing, watching westerns and sports. He was an avid Mountaineer basketball and football fan. Joe always enjoyed a garden and could fix anything. He enjoyed watching artists, especially Bob Ross, and took up his desire to paint in his last years. He was a kind and gentle man who was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, uncle, cousin, and loyal friend. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him Joe is survived by his loving wife, a son, James Vasil of Myrtle Beach S C, a daughter, Mary Jo Vasil Haines and husband John of Centreville, MD, a granddaughter Jamee Vasil, two grandsons Roxy Joseph Vasil and Jerad Vasil. He is also survived by sisters-in-law, Eva Rabagia, Ilene Milovich and Anna Woods, and daughter-in-law Margaret Vasil. Joe was the last surviving member of his immediate family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers Frank Vasil, Sam Vasil, sister Alice Vasil Thompson, half-brother Milton Joy, and a son, John Vasil. Friends and family may be able to give their respects at the Fred L Jenkins Funeral Home on Friday, April 25 from 3 - 8 pm. A mass of Christian burial will take place at 11:00 am on Saturday April 26 at St Mary's Catholic Church in Star City. Interment will take place immediately following at the East Oak Grove Cemetery with full military honors. The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of Mon General Hospital for the care he received during his recent stays.
