Joan S. Chipps

September 16, 1924 — December 4, 2013

Joan (Sapp) Chipps, 89, died peacefully at home on Wednesday, December 4, 2013. She was preceded in death by her parents Bruce and Mary (O'Donnell) Sapp, her husband James C. Chipps, and also seven brothers: Paige, Robert, Miles, Howard, Quentin, John, and Benjamin (B.F) Sapp. Joan is survived by her five children: daughter and son-in-law Mary Ann and Peter Moskaluk; son and daughter-in-law Jim and Charlotte Chipps; daughter and son-in-law Kristina (Bea) and Doug Cantis; daughter and son-in-law Judy and Kiriakos Hazimihalis; and son and daughter-in-law Jeff and Alesia Chipps. Joan is further survived by eight grandchildren: Stephanie, Erin, Matt, Katina, Joanna, Irini, Clay, and Morgan, eight great-grandchildren, and also her sister Mary Lydia Trickett. Joan was born September 16, 1924 in Independence WV, where she lived until her marriage in 1947. Joan was a member of the Glen Oaks Church of Christ of Morgantown. Throughout her life, Joan's Christian faith was exemplified by her every word and deed. Her remarkable calmness and serene nature, regardless of what was happening, was always a great comfort to her family and everyone who met her. Growing up on the family farm during The Great Depression instilled in her an unwavering spirit and "fortitude" as well as a no nonsense approach to life. Joan's most outstanding characteristic to anyone who met her was her loving, servant heart. Joan was known to all as a person who "Never" complained and made great sacrifices to care for others and make them feel comfortable. With family roots dating to The American Revolution, Joan cherished conservative values and was very patriotic. During WWII, at the age of 20, she served her country by working in Baltimore, MD as a "Rosie the Riveter" at the Glenn Martin Aircraft Factory, while her future husband James headed off to Normandy. After raising their five children, she worked at Sterling Faucet for 20 years until her retirement in 1988. Joan was an avid reader, enjoyed gardening and being outdoors. She also enjoyed crossword puzzles and playing her harmonica. But most of all, she loved spending time with her grandchildren. Her selfless nature and positive influence left a lasting impression on their hearts. Joan will be sorely missed by her family and all who knew her. Family and friends may visit at the Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home, 10 S. High St, Morgantown on Saturday, December 7, from 12:00 - 1:00pm. Services will be held at 1:00pm officiated by Alan Williamson.
