James L. Propst, Sr.

August 19, 1946 — April 22, 2024

James L. Propst, Sr., known as Jim to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on April 22, 2024, at Mon Health Medical Center in Morgantown. Born on August 19, 1946, in the same city that he would love and reside in for the entirety of his life, Jim's presence was a warm and constant fixture in the Morgantown community.

The son of the late Helen and Virgil Pase, and Edward Propst, Jim is preceded in death by his sister, Linda Pase, but leaves behind a loving and extensive family. His devoted wife of more than 56 years, Linda L. Griffin Propst, has been his steadfast partner in life's journey. He was a caring father to his daughters, Kimberly (Rodney) Cale and Mickey (Scott) Brewer, both of Morgantown, and his son, James L. 'Jim' (Kathy) Propst, Jr. of Maidsville. He also leaves behind his Aunt, Betty Kelly of Mt. Morris, PA.

Jim delighted in his role as a grandfather to his grandchildren, Rodney (Nikki) Cale, Jr., Mathew Cale, Madison Brewer (Owen Barry), Derek Brewer, Megan Brewer, Tarah (Forest) Stiles, Kodi Propst, and Brittany and Courtney Tennant. His seven great-grandchildren brought immeasurable joy to his later years.

A graduate of University High School's class of 1966, Jim demonstrated a strong work ethic from an early age. He began his career working for the State Department of Highways during high school. After graduation, he dedicated six years to this role before embarking on a notable 29-year tenure as a Monongalia County Deputy Sheriff. Upon retirement, he continued to serve his community through private security at Gabriel Brothers, showcasing his commitment to the safety and well-being of those around him.

Jim had a zeal for life that was revealed in his various interests. A fan of NASCAR, he spent many weekends cheering on his favorite drivers and reveling in the energy of the race. His love for slot machines was more than a hobby; it was a testament to his enduring spirit of adventure and hope. He took great pride in his home and could often be found cutting grass several times a week or meticulously detailing the family vehicles, ensuring everything was in perfect order.

Those who knew Jim would describe him as generous, selfless, and kind. He had a natural ability to make anyone feel welcome and valued. His inclination to assist wherever needed revealed the depth of his character. He was always active and eager to lend a helping hand, embodying the true spirit of community and fellowship.

Jim's memory will be treasured as a loving husband, a nurturing father, an adoring grandfather, and a true friend to many. His impact on those he loved and the community he served is indelible. His contributions to his hometown of Morgantown and his ceaseless positivity will not be forgotten. A man of integrity and heart, Jim Propst Sr. lived a life that was a testament to the best of us - caring deeply for his family, devoting himself to public service, and always finding time for the joys of life.

As we say goodbye to Jim, we celebrate a life well-lived and honor the legacy of a man who was the embodiment of generosity and kindness. He will be profoundly missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the good fortune to know him.
