Grace Irene Stephens

On July 19, 2017, Grace Irene Stephens, received her wings on the day she was born 76 years ago. She was born July 19, 1941 at home in Morgantown, daughter to the late Clarence Everett and Mattie Holt Marshall.

She attended school at Monongalia High School and was part of the first integrated class of Morgantown Junior High School. She loved to cook and was an exceptional baker, famous for her caramel cake and butterscotch pie. She enjoyed travelling and was always willing to help the less fortunate. Miss Grace was First Lady of AME Churches in WV, PA and OH conferences. She was also a lifelong member of the Greater St. Paul’s AME Church of Morgantown.

Her gentle sweet spirit will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

She worked as a private duty LPN for J.W. Ruby and many others. She was also a Pharmacy Assistant at WVU Hospital and was previously employed by the Kroger Company.

Grace leaves to mourn, her son John E. ‘Stevie’ Stephens, Jr.; three grandchildren, Stevie Lamar, Shanetha Darlene and Shane Edward Stephens; five great grandchildren, Saiviara Grace, Samarea Rashaè, Samiyah Nycole, Zyrin Rose and Zakarè John; one sister Linnie Mae Wiley; one niece, Rochelle Marshall; four nephews, Lloyd Wilson, William ‘Bill’ Wiley, William ‘Jeff’ Marshall and Kevin Marshall; God child Caryn Bailey; special cousin, Joan Carol Blue and a host of cousins and friends.

Grace was preceded in death by her soul mate of 53 years, Rev. John E. Stephens, Sr.; one son Keith Everett Stephens; brother, Clarence W. Marshall; one brother-in-law, William H. Wiley and sister-in-law, M. Diane Marshall.

Friends may call at the Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home on Monday, July 24, 2017 from 4pm until 8pm. Visitation will continue Tuesday at the Riverside Apostolic Church, Dents Run Road, from 10am until her homegoing service at 11am with Pastors Georgia Morrow and Daniel Mason officiating. She will be laid to rest beside her husband at the East Oak Grove Cemetery.
