George Riley Thomas

December 25, 1930 — October 30, 2016

George Riley Thomas, 85, of Cassville, New Hill community, passed away on Sunday, October 30, 2016, at the Monongalia General Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. George was born on Christmas Day 1930 in Coketon, WV, Tucker Co., son to the late Lowell ‘Butch’ and Anna Putlovis Thomas.

George attended University High School and then enlisted in the US Army, Third Armored Calvary Battalion, from 1952 until 1954 when he was honorably discharged. George was part owner in the Shriver Club and retired as a Coal Miner having worked for the Peabody Coal Company at both the Rachel and Miracle Run Mines.

Although mining was George’s occupation, carpentry and woodworking were his passion. He loved working with wood. He could often be found in his shop creating everything from furniture to children’s toys.

George was very involved in his community holding memberships in the local union where he was a member of the UMWA, District 31 Election Committee, UMWA Local 1570 President, American Legion Post 992, Mt. Morris, PA, Morgantown Moose Lodge No. 264, recording secretary Carpenter’s Union, and New Hill Playground Trustee.

George is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mrs. Connie Marcella Brooks Thomas, children, Marcella ‘Marcy’ (John) Raddish, Carla (Norman) White, Georgeann (Daniel) Swiger and George R. Thomas, II, grandchildren, John and Sgt. Joshua Raddish, Capt. Lucy White and Stephen White, Tommy and Abby Swiger and many nieces and nephews.

Also surviving are his two sisters, Helen (Robert) Massullo and Vickie Sue (Ross) McVey, sisters-in-law, Patricia Thomas and Mary Lee Thomas.

In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his sister Jean and husband Jake Ponceroff, brothers Lowell ‘Bob’ and wife Virginia Thomas, and John and James Thomas.

Friends and family are invited to the Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home on Wednesday, November 2, 2016 from 2pm until 8pmand again on Thursday from 10am until time of services at 11am. Burial will follow at the Lawnwood Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Westover VFW Post 9916 and the WVANG, Camp Dawson.
