George Joseph Nels, 89 of Pursglove passed away Friday August 5, 2011 at the Sundale Nursing Home. George was born June 2, 1922 in Mineville, NY son of the late Frank and Anna Salga Nels. George graduated from Sherman High School in Seth, WV after which he enlisted in the United States Navy in 1943. Following his honorable discharge in 1946, George moved back to Morgantown where he operated Liberty Grocery for many years. He then later retired from WVU's comptroller's office. George will be remembered as a kind hearted giving soul. Every year he grew a garden and gave nearly all of his produce away to friends, neighbors and strangers alike. Every spring the community would look forward to his bountiful garden and beautiful flowers. George was influential in the establishment of the St. Ursula's Food Pantry and was a member of the St. Mary Catholic Church of Star City. George is survived by one brother Stanley Nels and wife Jean of Morgantown; sister-in-law, Nellie Nels of Westover and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents George was preceded in death by brothers; William, Steve, Charles and Edward Nels and sisters; Anna Menear, Mary Zini, Helen Nels and Sophia Kuhn. Friends may call the Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home Monday Aug. 8, from 5-8pm and again on Tuesday Aug. 9 at the St. Mary Catholic Church from 10am until Mass of Christian Burial at 11am with Rev. Father John V. DiBacco as celebrant. Burial will take place at the East Oak Grove Cemetery. Donations can be made to the St. Ursula's Food Pantry PO Box 18 Pursglove, WV 26546
