Fred F. Wojcik

September 28, 1951 — July 27, 2017

Fred F. Wojcik was born September 28, 1951 to the late professor Dr. Albert F. and Louise Wojcik; where he was raised in Morgantown and attended St. John's Church. From the highlands to the islands, Fred was a proud Polish mountaineer. Beginning with attaining the rank Eagle Scout in the Wiles Hill Boy Scout Troop, he was an avid outdoorsman living off the land - hunting, fishing, and gathering all along the way. As a sports enthusiast, excelling in anything that he set his heart to, Fred was an all-star baseball player, state champion wrestler, and played football for the Mohigans. A lifeguard at Mont Chateau State Park and a certified scuba diver, knowing no boundaries, he qualified for the Olympics in tandem canoeing with his wife. Competing in various skiing and ice skating events he earned the crown of Mon County Ice King. An avid reader with a thirst for knowledge, his many hobbies included chess and rock hounding.

A Morgantown native,he graduated in the Morgantown High School class of 1969. He earned a bachelor of science in Accounting with Economics at West Virginia University in 1973, and continued his education at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida. A sharpshooter in both the field and the boardroom, he practiced as a Certified Public Accountant in both Florida and West Virginia. He became a Paul Harris Fellow of the Morgantown Rotary Club and played golf as a member of the Fairmont Field Club.

Diagnosed with small cell lung cancer in February of 2016, by May he was given days to live and he crossed over to a non-FDA approved drug. He did 18 months of experimental treatment at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. Going the longest in the study, he continued the quest for a cure after life by donating his body to research at the NIH.

He is survived by his wife Lynn, and their children Vanessa and Justin Wojcik; his granddaughters Jenna, Erica, Bailey, and Shania; his beloved dogs Q and Percy; his brother Robert, and many cousins.

Always expanding his mind and sharing his wisdom, his legacy for the outdoors will continue by providing nature education to future generations through the Chestnut Ridge Regional Park's Nature Center. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Nature Center by contacting Kat at 304-594-1773.

A remembrance gathering will be held at the Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home on Monday, August 7 from 4-6pm. A scripture vigil will be offered to conclude the evening at 5:30 by Rev. Father Walt Jagela of the St. John University Parish. Cremation will follow and a private scattering ceremony will be at the convenience of the family.
