EVA CLAIRE HAWLEY LEWIS of Heritage Point in Morgantown, passed away peacefully on January 7, 2009. She was born March 20, 1911, in Masontown, West Virginia, daughter of the late Arthur William and Ella Mae Trembly Hawley. Mrs. Lewis attended public schools in Morgantown and graduated from Morgantown High School, where she was salutatorian, president of the sophomore class, and editor-in-chief of the Mohigan yearbook. She also graduated from West Virginia University and did graduate work at the University of Wisconsin and Duke University. She was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, Mortar Board, Rhododendron, Li-toon-awa, Pan Hellenic May Queen Court, R.O.T.C. Sponsor, and other honoraries, and was a member of Delta Gamma sorority. She taught at Morgantown Junior High, Kingwood High School, and Morgantown High School, retiring from the latter in 1973. She was married in 1939 to Attorney Thomas Watson Lewis of Kingwood, who died Memorial Day of 1965. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Kingwood and Morgantown and was active in the Women's Association, Order of the Eastern Star, American Legion Auxiliary, Daughters of the American Revolution, Delphian Book Club and Neighborhood Book Club, Friends of Morgantown Public Library, Morgantown Women's Club, Morgantown Service League, and Monongalia Arts Center. She is survived by a sister, Ireta Tebay of Wheeling, West Virginia; three children, Thomas Watson Lewis, II, and wife Elyse, of Butte, Montana; Carolyn Bolinger and husband Jim, of Ames, Iowa, and Suzanne Lewis and husband John Nutter, of Laramie, Wyoming; two grandchildren, Dr. Brian S. Bolinger, of Roanoke, Virginia, and Catherine Ann Bolinger, of Boston, Massachusetts; five great grandchildren, Daniel Brian, Joseph Scott, Thomas James and Mark Andrew, and Matthew Nicholas Bolinger, of Roanoke, Virginia; three nephews, Samuel K. Johnson, of Boulder, Colorado, William Johnson, of Wheeling, West Virginia, and Steven Hawley, of Issaquah, Washington. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a son, Richard Patrick Lewis. Funeral services will be held at Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home on Thursday, January 14 at 11:00 am, followed by graveside services at Lawnwood Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Wednesday, January 13 from 6 - 8 p.m. and Thursday from 10 - 11 a.m.
