Erika Capelle

December 10, 1925 — September 7, 2016

Erika Fruechtenicht Capelle passed away peacefully on September 7, 2016. She was born in a small village in Northern Germany on December 10, 1925.

At the age of 16 she followed her dream and went to Hamburg to become a nurse. She lived through the bombing of Hamburg and after the war met Roland Capelle who was in dental school. Roland moved to the US and became a dentist in the American army and was then stationed in France. On a visit back to Hamburg he reunited with Erika and they became engaged in Paris. When Roland was posted back to the US, they married and she came on a US army transport plane, through Ellis Island and on to Washington DC, where Roland went back to school at Howard University so that he could become a civilian dentist.

They raised their three children Susan, Claudia and Michael in the Washington area, instilling in them their values of hard work, education and physical fitness. In 1978 they moved to their beloved Deep Creek Lake in the mountains of Western Maryland, full time, and Roland established a dental practice in Oakland, MD. They lived happily there, enjoying the beauty of the lake and tending their beautiful garden until Roland died in 1999. In retirement, they loved to take driving trips to discover the treasures of the American West.

In 2003, Erika moved to the Village at Heritage Point where she lived the past 13 years, loving her beautiful home and surroundings. She could be seen most mornings taking a walk around the premises often weeding the flower beds as she passed by. She made many great friendships there and was incredibly fortunate to have spent her last years been cared for by wonderful people who further enriched her life.

Besides Roland and her children, the other great loves of her life where her 3 grandchildren Kristopher, Benjamin, and Katrina and her great great granddaughter Nora. Nora enriched her "Omama's" life with her weekly FaceTime visits. Erika will be missed by all who loved her but she is now at peace and free of the physical burden of her body.

A memorial service will be held, Sunday, October 2, 2016 at 4 p.m. at The Village at Heritage Point, 1 Heritage Point, Morgantown, WV 26505. Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Donations may be made in Erika’s memory to American Cancer Society 122 South High St. Morgantown, WV 26501.
