Dorothy Elaine Drake, 94, of Morgantown passed March 24, 2026. Born January 22, 1932, in Erwin, West Virginia she was one of 14 children to the late James and Esta Ellen Bennett.
Dorothy attended Victory High and was a proud 1950 graduate of University High School where she was cheerleader and May Queen. She went on to serve as secretary or office manager for Fred Schaus at WVU; Dr. Holter; Judge Jaco; Dr. Touma ENT; and lastly Dr. Harrison and Jacubec at Morgantown Pediatric and Associates.
She married Thomas Drake and they spent 67 years together. They had two daughters, Debbie and Cindy. She is survived by her sister Evelina Ashcraft and sister-in-law Iris Jones, daughter Debbie Tampoya, grandsons Justin (Wendy) Smith and Ben (Bronlyn) Smith, great granddaughters Rylea, Emma, Maggie and Mia also son-in-law Timothy Hawthorne.
In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by husband Tom, daughter Cindy, son-in-law Dickie Tampoya, and many brothers, sisters, and in-laws.
When their daughters were young Dorothy and Tom enjoyed weekend camping in their travel trailer to state parks and the beach. They roller skated at The Shack, ice skated at the Trout Pond, took Sunday drives together, and enjoyed hosting parties. Later she loved reading, playing cards with friends, WVU tailgates, camping and boating at Cheat Lake, traveling and going on cruises. Dorothy was the original sun worshiper at the beach or at the lake. You could find her all day on a lounge or raft soaking up the rays. She was an avid bowler at Suburban Lanes and loved their trips to the state bowling tournament. She was a self-taught seamstress, an excellent cook and loved to travel with the seniors later in life. She was a strong, independent lady, living in her Bakers Ridge home until age 93.
The family would like to thank the nurses, aids, cooks and staff of the Village at Heritage Point where she lived for the past year. Thanks also to West Virginia Caring Hospice for their comfort.
