Clarence Ray Hess

January 30, 1914 — October 3, 2013

Clarence Ray Hess who was born in Morgantown, W.Va. on January 30, 1914, died on October 3, 2013 at age ninety-nine in Bentonville, Va. He was educated at West Virginia Univ. where he received his Master's Degree in Education before joining the WWII effort by working on a small part of the atomic bomb for the Dupont Chemical Company. He then joined the Navy OCS and served in Trinidad as Lt.JG in precision weapons sighting. After the war, he taught and was an administrator in W. Va. and Ohio schools for nearly thirty years before retiring to Florida with his wife in 1975. He moved to the Luray, Va., area in 1996 where he lived until his death. He loved nature, animals, gardening and young people. His philanthropic activities included the donation of 62 acres of land in Morgan County, Ohio to the Waterford Boy Scout Troop 222 for use as a training and camping facility, as well as 140 acres of land to the county for use as a park. He revered the American chestnut tree and donated a large chest made from a single board of the wood to The American Chestnut Foundation. He was preceded in death by his wife of forty-nine years, Harriet Irene Ward Hess. He is survived by his sons David (wife Peggy and their daughter Claire), and Darel (wife Gail and their sons Donald (wife Dina and children Kailyn, Connor, Brianna and Rowan) and Phil (wife Sandra). Visitation is at Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home, 10 South High Street, Morgantown, WV 26501 on Saturday, October 12, 2013 from 11am until 1pm. Following the visitation friends and family are invited to stay for a Time of Remembrance from 1pm until 2pm. Graveside services will immediately follow at the East Oak Grove Cemetery. The family suggests in lieu of flowers that donations be made to: Blue Ridge Hospice in memory of Clarence Hess, 333 W. Cork St., # 405, Winchester, VA 22601.
