Betty Lou Stephens

Betty Lou Stephens of Morgantown passed away peacefully on Thursday January 24, 2013 at Ruby Memorial Hospital with her family at her side. She was born November 9, 1929 in Dillon County, SC, daughter of the late Harvey Marion and Jessie Ann Lupo Baxley. She graduated from North Charleston High School, SC. She met her husband, Gerald, while he served at the naval air base in Charleston. They were married 55 years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Gerald O. Stephens of Morgantown; sister Evelyn Margaret D'Agostino; and brother Bobby Lee Baxley. Betty is survived by three children Gregory K. Stephens of Morgantown, Brenda Jane Moore (Ron) of Oak Hill, WV, and Angela J. Brown (Bill) of Bluffton, SC; four grandchildren Rebekah Moore Smith (Andrew), Stephen Andrew Andy' Moore (Emily), Coleman Brown and Whitney Joy Brady (Daniel); eight great grandsons Ethan, Micah, Noah and Caleb Smith, Benjamin, Joshua, and Asher Moore, and Kadyn Brady. She is also survived by two sisters Mildred P. Willingham and Marvel Jean Crosby of Charleston, SC. She was a devoted wife and mother. She volunteered with the Ronald McDonald House, WVU Hospital, and was a member of Lifelong Learners. She loved nature and she and her husband enjoyed their WV Wild Yard which was full of wildflowers, birds and butterflies. Betty traveled to all 50 states and traveled throughout the world. She was a patriot who loved her country and family. The family of Betty Stephens would like to thank the following caregivers: Sandra Cotton, her primary caregiver-Mom loved you! The staff at WVU Hospital: Neurology, Palliative Care, and ninth floor and ICU Nursing. A special thank you to Martha Powers and Tanya Smith of neurology. To honor Betty's wishes cremation services were arranged by Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Ronald McDonald House, 841 Country Club Dr. Morgantown, WV 26505, In Memory of Betty Stephens.
