(Arthur) James Shade, passed away at his home, surrounded by his family on Monday, November 1, 2010. He was born June 10, 1948 in Morgantown, the son of the late James Donnell and Irene Miller Shade. James was a local businessman for over twenty years, operating Shades Car Care. He also was a bus driver for the Monongalia County Board of Education during that time period. James was a graduate of University High School. Following his graduation, he served in the United States Air Force from 1968-1972. He served active duty in Viet Nam. In 1968-1969, he provided security for vice president Spiro Agnew on his trips to Viet Nam. He was trained as a weapons specialist in small arms and heavy weapons. From 1970-1972 he served as a military policeman. Upon his return to civilian life, he enrolled in WVU from 1972-1975 and from 1976-1977, he studied drafting at the Monongalia County Technical School. James is known to many in the region for his volunteer endeavors with community youth. He coached many children, both boys and girls, in community leagues for basketball and baseball. James organized basketball clinics designed to teach basic and intermediate skills. Many of the tournaments he assisted in organizing were fund raisers, most notably the 1992 Holiday Invitational Tournament for Children's Hospital. James will be remembered for many attributes; his winning smile, his ability to network to get the job done and the fact that he never met a stranger. Once you met him, you didn't forget him. His passion for life carried over into his passion for family, friends and golf. Although his untimely death at the young age of 62, he lived each day fully. He is survived by his life partner of 38 years Jennifer Craddock, his son Ryan Shade of Morgantown, his daughter Malaika Rhea of Nashville, Tn, his beloved grandchildren Malea Rhea and Mattox Rhea both of Nashville, Tn. Other family members surviving are brothers Tony Shade of Clarksburg, WV, Daniel Nichols of Washington, DC and Pete Shade of Morgantown, and his sister Eva Lee Shade of Morgantown. He also in survived by his sister in law, Ruth Shade along with many nieces and nephews. Friends and family are invited to honor his life through visitation at the Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home on Saturday, November 6, 2010 from 2-4 and 7-9pm. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Sunday, November 7, 2010 at 1:30 pm with Rev. Mary Morgan Officiating. Burial will follow in the East Oak Grove Cemetery with military honors by VFW Post 9916 and WVANG.
