Allen H. Pap Echard

July 20, 1923 — November 30, 2016

Allen Herbert (Pap) Echard, 93, beloved husband, father and grandfather passed away Wednesday November 30, 2016 at Windy Hill Village. Allen was born July 20, 1923 on Birch Hollow Road in what was then known as Cheat Neck to Walter ‘Barney’ William Echard and Blanche Ellen Cole.

Allen worked in a shipyard in Baltimore at a navy yard called Curtis Bay before he was drafted to the Army two months before his 18 birthday. He went to basic training at Ft. Lewis in Washington. He was stationed in Guadalcanal. After returning, he worked for Mr. and Mrs. Greer and later for the Raese family. He then worked for the Monongalia County Board of Education as a maintenance man for 30 years before retiring. During his time with the board of education, he built many trophy cases in schools throughout the county.

He especially enjoyed spending time with his friends, family and grandchildren. He was a lifelong member of the Avery United Methodist Church.

Allen is survived by his daughter, Joyce Ann Wassick and husband Dan, Sr. of Bruceton Mills, formerly of Cheat Lake; son Allen L. ‘Moe’ Echard and wife Phyllis of Reedsville, WV; special niece Brenda Bowers of Tallahassee, FL; former daughter-in-law Karen Echard Rice of Morgantown; grandchildren, Leah Bowers, Wendy and Rich Zierer, Dan Wassick, Jr. and Kim Wassick, Nicole Wassick, Kelli and Bobby Teets, Tami and Robbie Davis, Holli and Donny Kisner, Laci Echard, Farrah Echard and Kyle Echard; great grandchildren Alecia Bowers, Danielle Wassick, Garrett, Braydon, and Morgan Wassick, Tyler and Regan Teets, Karmyn Daniels, Mason, Haydin, Jozlyn and Bristyn Davis, Kyndel, Elyse, Anastyn Hazel and Trisdyn Kisner, Ryder and Kya Orchard and Darryl Echard and Isaiah Murray; great-great grandchildren, Wyatt, Branson, Kimber, Daylon and Emberlyn. Also surviving is sister Hazel Hosey, of Arizona and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Allen is preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Virginia Echard; a grandson, Kirk Wassick; great grandson Dravyn Cain; his twin sister Carolyn Taylor; sister Roberta Cline; brother, Paul Echard.

Family and friends will be received on Friday, December 2, 2016 at the Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8pm and again on Saturday from 10am until the 11am service with Pastor Dan Kimble officiating. Burial will follow at the Pleasant Hills Cemetery.

The family would like to thank nurses, Sharon Norwich and Wendy Johnson of Amedysis Hospice and the staff of Windy Hill Village for the compassionate care given to ‘Pap’ over the past couple of years.
