Alfred "Steaks" Emanuel Jones, Sr., age 101, of Star City, WV died Thursday, November 22, 2012 at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, WV. He was born April 13, 1911 in Tallahassee, FL, the son of the late Allen Jones and Martha Knight Jones. He was the oldest of six children. His family moved from Attapulgus, Georgia where his family worked as sharecroppers to Carolina, WV in 1917 to work in the coal mines. They moved to Osage, WV in 1924. He attended Beechurst-Monongalia High School. He moved to Star City in 1956 with his wife, Barbara, and their children where he lived until his death. He was a consummate story teller and loved to tell jokes. His favorite pastimes was discussing current events and sharing his wisdom with family and friends. He loved being surrounded by his numerous friends and adopted family. No one was ever a stranger. He was loved and respected by many. He was an entrepreneur owning Jones Transfer with his brother, Jack. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943-1945 in Africa and Italy as a staff sergeant with the 456th Signal Battalion. He retired in 1974, after 45 years with the Osage-Christopher Coal Company #3 mine as a coal miner. He held different positions with the UMWA. He was very active in church leadership. This included New Hope Baptist Church in Osage and Star City Methodist Church where he served as Sunday school superintendent and teacher. He was a lifetime member of I.B.P.O.E.W., where he served as the Exalted Ruler of the Osage and Morgantown chapters. He also served as president of the Morgantown chapter of the NAACP. His marriages to Josephine Johnson and Barbara Jean Jackson ended in divorce. He was preceded in death by his parents, Martha (Knight) and Allen Jones, his brothers IC (Jack), John, Phillip, and Thomas Lee and his sister Lillian. He is survived by his three children, Aremita Watson (Rudy) of Silver Spring, MD, Mamie Diggs (Blair) of Silver Spring, MD and Alfred Jones, Jr. (Cathy) of Austin, TX and seven grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind special friends and his caregivers, Eleanor Jones (niece) and Patty Lemon. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Beechurst & Monongalia Alumni Association c/o Peggy Chappell, Treasurer, designate "Alfred Jones Fund," 1255 Montrose Avenue, Morgantown, WV 26505 to be used for education scholarships. Arrangements are under the direction of Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home. Friends and family will be received on Friday, November 30 from 6 - 9 p.m. and Saturday, December 1 from 10 - 11 a.m. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, December 1, 2012. Internment will follow in Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens with military rites conducted by WVANG Honor Guard, Camp Dawson, and Westover VFW Post 9916.
